Queestion about addon channels

My guild used to run an addon that kept track of session stats (heal / damage / kills / kb / renown etc) and shared it between members, by using a client side created channel. I know this is not allowed? or not possible currently, although i am not sure why. But would it be possible to create a "common" channel on the server side which allows addon traffic?
