Just curious, as I have been gone for a long while. When exactly was this change implemented?
Since always. Guard splits dmg by 50:50 of what the guard target gets. So obviously it has to be based on their mitigation value.
Dying is no option.

There is a way to mitigate it. It called investing in parry/block.
