That's completely wrong. Regardless if it's true or not, that article WILL have an impact from now on if it stays there, and in a negative way. There are A LOT of people that read MMOSite and take it seriously. That article is bad news for RoR. it also might get unwanted attention from EA and the such.Jaycub wrote:All publicity is good publicity.

you know they HAVE to, after some time take action, right? Blizzard didn't shut down Nostalrius until it was FORCED by the law to shut it down, the Nost devs said so, and blizzard themselves said so. They do care, just not right now.
"The honest answer is, failure to protect against intellectual property infringement would damage Blizzard’s rights. This applies to anything that uses WoW’s IP, including unofficial servers.” executive producer J. Allen Brack on the battle.net forums.
That's about WoW and Blizzard, but the same still applies to WAR

Less likely to happen here for a variety of reasons.Nefarian78 wrote:Halhammer wrote:Like they care. After 3 years. Chill the beans.Nefarian78 wrote:

1. WoW is based in the US. - GW is based in the UK, different laws probably.
2. WoW was still undergoing active development. - GW stopped development by not renewing the license.
3. WoW was their own owner/operator of the IP. - Mythic/EA no longer has rights to the IP. Nothing for them to protect.
4. Nostralius at one point did accept 11k$ worth of donations. - RoR has not, and will never accept any sort of donation. We are very clear on that.
5. Nostralius had a massive playerbase that rivaled, and surpassed legit MMO's. - RoR can handle 1400 online, although not well.
Not that we're really interested in poking the bear, we just want to keep the game going and essentially hope we're a small enough fish with no money to sue over, that they wouldn't bother.

Also tbh the server already has a rep, for good or ill. People who wanna play a Warhammer MMO will play it. Those who don't, won't. Private servers are niche and anyone familiar with them knows how it can be. I have played on my share, and maintain that RoR is generally moderated in a fair manner and updated regularly. I have been on private servers that are funded by donations where they sell gear and characters and even with all that, the devs are uncommunicative and inactive. Have been on others where the devs openly support a bunch of literal Nazi roleplayers (which was just as juvenile and annoying as youd expect). So it could be way worse.

I just hope you're right and nothing bad is ever going to happen. Still, maybe it's me being paranoid but that article is really bad news for the entire server.wargrimnir wrote: Less likely to happen here for a variety of reasons.

Even if it's written by an angry guy being a douche, it's still an angry douche that can write articles on a popular site about MMOs.
And if he's really that adamant about this whole thing (writing an entire article because he got banned) he's going to keep lurking in the forums and watch every single thing you guys write just to find anything to bash you with.

Stuff like teinhala and nyky getting banzored was probably worse for server pop than this could ever be. Russia is stronk like bear and loves it some Warhammer. And lo and behold, Russian blob still haunts the lakes to this day

I dunno, sounds an awful lot like butthurt and conspiracy. The Article wrote:you ask THREE separate GMs about a rule and are given the same answer that it’s okay by all three. Cool. Everything’s good, you say. A fourth then pops up and tells you that you’re breaking the rules. You explain that you were told all is fine, and he disagrees. He asks who told you otherwise and you let him know it’s all in the chat log and you don’t remember the other GM names (but is very easy to see since they’ve made it clear they can read chat logs). But he wants nothing to do with that and says it’s on YOU to give proof – instead, he lets you know that you’ve been banned and you can take it up with the head GM. He even tells you to contact them directly. You end up doing so, and that GM immediately jumps on you for not following protocol in approaching him, despite following what you were told to do.
And FYI, I'm pretty sure that Warhammer Online is now in the abandonware bin, since the copyright is not enforced (Mythic owned it, not EA IIRC), no one is re-branding or repackaging it for sale, and the original owners discontinued the product officially.

We're not a secret. We front page on google when you search for Warhammer Online at #4 or #5 depending on the day of the week. Most of the major game journo sites have posted about us. If GW doesn't know at this point, I doubt mmosite.com is going to draw their attention over what is kind of obviously an editor of theirs writing a negative article because he thought his privilege would protect him.Nefarian78 wrote:I just hope you're right and nothing bad is ever going to happen. Syp at massivelyop.com posted a more indirect article about Warhammer Online (two days ago), from the perspective of the cancelled version out of Climax. Suppose it could be coincidence, but it certainly gets a couple people thinking about WAR, and any brief googling will lead them to us.
There's /r/mmorpg where our new promo video is near the top of their Hot posts. People watch the video, see the server, and dive in. Some of them dig into the comments where there's a mix of positive and negative stuff.
GW doesn't gain anything from shutting us down. We don't have money. We're not big enough to matter in their other gaming efforts. We're not vagrantly (sic) abusing their IP by introducing things they would vehemently object to. If anything they would cost themselves some money in pursuing it (or keep their retainer busy I guess), and ruin the gaming pasttime of a couple thousand people. That in itself would risk losing them as potential future customers as well, and if I've ever seen the internet react before, spreading angry vibes about big bad gaming companies ruining fun is one of their favorite things to do. Why bother?
