A Question About Streaming

A few days ago someone made an off-topic post to let people know about a new DAoC freeshard that was opening up. Curious, I went and perused their website. Looking through their rules I noticed something interesting - one of the rules specifically addressed people streaming on twitch, namely that anyone doing so was required to be on at least a 10 minute delay in order to prevent the stream from being used as a way to spy on opposing realms.

After thinking about it a bit, I think that we should discuss having a similar rule here, as there have been a few odd situations that I've experienced where a possible reason for what occurred could be explained by someone using streams for opposing realm intelligence gathering purposes.

Just something to think about, and I'd be interested to know if anyone else has come across opposing realm players doing things that could be explained by this going on.

If we are going down that route, then why not also prevent streamers from using voice as it could allow enemy snipers to find out their tactics!

It's unnecesaary, lots of micromanagement (who is going to check?), and would simply deter people from streaming if they were to be viewed in such a light.

That seems overly paranoid. DAOC discouraging people from fighting? If you know where the enemy is, get your killing on. This game isn't that subtle.

The thing is, it can be used to specifically target smaller groups or individuals by warbands, leading to the lopsided fights that we seem to be increasingly experiencing. I have also seen 6 mans that have captured and sat on a BO (both order and destro) suddenly turn and run away for no discernible reason, only to have a WB come rolling in a minute or so later. What DAoC seems to be trying to prevent isn't fighting, they are trying to prevent ganking via numerical superiority and smaller groups running away if they see a warband moving their way on a stream.

As to comparing it to voice comms, I actually think that should be reined in too, not everyone has access/knows about using them. Ideally voice should be built into the game (as it was in LotRO or any of the numerous FPS games) so that everyone is on a level playing field in that aspect. However I know that this will never happen, you guys have too much to do as it is.

Voice comm software is accessible to all, and has been around since the age of the dinosaur; it is entirely your prerogative if you choose not to use it. If you can download the game, then I don't imagine it would be too arduous a task to download Discord/TS.

For what it's worth I would love ingame voice comms (like LOTRO), but feel it would end up triggering a lot of people, and ultimately end up in the bin (like xrealm talk).

Streamers that light a beacon for the enemy to follow are responsible for their group after that silly choice. I don't believe streamsniping should be wrong, I don't really believe in streaming as a concept, use a delay if you're going to do it and don't record other players voice chat without their permission.

It's not that hard a concept to figure out: you play your game, you showcase your playing to people online for their benefit and entertainment, and if you are super successful with the kids then you might even start to bring in monies!

It's the perfect career to have, if you ask me... :D

Yah trigger people... that seems to be the only thing you like to do... im suprised you dont want voice as another format for you and your guild members to harrass people and then call them sensitive for not putting up with your crap! Anyway I'll m sure ill be lolbant for speaking the truth about one of the most toxic members of the community.
You can’t just attack/accuse any member of the community like this and get away with it like “inb4 lolbant I’m speaking truth”. There are Forum Rules which exist for a reason.

That comment seems extremely unnecessary at the topic at hand, don't you think?

I had someone mention this to me the other day. It can definitely put a damper on streaming because much of it is interacting with chat. Ten minutes in that context is an eternity.

In DAoC I can understand it. It can take a very long time to group up and get to an specific location in a gigantic world with no fast travel. Combine that with the huge advantage of getting the first strike in that game, it could really impact play.

That's not really the case with WAR. Different games, different impact of dying, smaller zones, less cc. There is already an almost 30 second delay built as well.

Good topic, but I don't personally think it would benefit the game. Though I'm probably biased 😁
