Yes, I know this is brought up a lot, but it really is proving frustrating to have to rely on a VPN to play.
I called our ISP (TalkTalk), and have changed our external IP several times. Once I was allowed to play, but when I logged off, I could no longer come back.
Is there something we are missing? We have followed every single piece of advice to the letter, and I am eager to know what the problem is, given that, even with a changed external IP, the problem persists!.

Re: Completely at a loss
What exactly were the symptoms you were getting when you don't use a VPN? I.e, red status icon on login server.
Only thing that springs to mind are the batch of IPs Talk talk use, and/or their network pathing allocated to that ISP. They're a wild stab in the dark but I'm unsure what else it could be.
Curiosity fueled question:

Symptoms are that, upon logging in, there is no server/character screne (just the normal background where the characters should be), and then the game just crashes (application now failed).
I haven't tried changing the default DNS , any tips on how to do that? =P I'll give it a go, I guess it's in the router settings somewhere.
Thanks as usual, Elven

Re: Completely at a loss
No problem at all.
The most common fault I've found in relation to authentication failed errors are usually a process/application running simultaneously when loading the game. Something like Asus tool assist or any of them kinds of applications are the most common culprits. Perhaps see if anything like that is running on the computer.
You can change the DNS preferences though the network adapter configuration, found through network and sharing center (On Windows).
Mine:
You can find some steps on how to do so here:

It's worth a shot, I suppose.

Re: Completely at a loss
Tried changing my IPV48 with your recommendations, to no avail
I've heard of that Asus tool thing affecting other people, but it doesn't seem to show up in 'processes'.

Re: Completely at a loss
Would it have anything to do with opening ports? Ought I try these DNS suggestions on the actual router itself? Sorry for spam.

Re: Completely at a loss
A friend had exactly the same problem, logged in but did not appear the characters and then immediately gave a mistake and closed.
He had to uninstall antivirus and pass a program to uninstall any kind of new installation that he did not recognize. So he came back to play.

Re: Completely at a loss
I've had this problem for ages as well.
For me, it only manifests itself, when I try to log on from my wifi-connection. If I hook up with an ethernet connection, there's no issues logging in whatsoever.
However, I did manage to find a fix to the issue, that allows me to log in even when using the wifi. It might work if you're having authentication issues with a cable connection as well.
Try this:
- Connect to a VPN (I use Cyperghost, as they have servers in the UK, which I assume is near the game server - also, I couldn't make this fix work with the Hotspot Shield VPN service, linked in one of the head stickies on this forum). I choose UK as my simulated country.
- When connected, open the launcher and log in to the game.
- When you reach the Character Selection screen, tab out of the game and disconnect your VPN service. (If I don't do this, the game hangs on the "connecting to server" message. It doesn't freeze and result in the "critical error" message, though - so you can simply tab out and disconnect your VPN, when/if you reach this point.)
- After disconnecting your VPN, tab back in to the game and click "Select" in the Server Selection window. It should now connect to the game server without any issues or authentication errors.
Note: if you crash or log out and want to log back in, then you have to repeat the process.
Hope it helps!

Re: Completely at a loss
When I try to do that, upon disconnecting, it just goes back to the normal window with no 'Login completed...' etc text.
