Orc or Ork?

Heya! Sorry to make a thread so soon after just making one! But, had a quick question.

Why in Warhammer, they spell it Orc? But, in 40k, they spell it Ork? Reading that aloud felt weird.

I personally like Ork better. Feels more orky. But, just wonder as to why it's different between 40k and other Warhammer lore! Thanks!

I think Warhammer is the arbiter for the correct spelling of this race of big green men. Don't think I had even heard of Orcs before GamesWorkshop opened a store in my local shopping center (Mall for teh Americans) all those years ago. I think the bastardised spelling of Orc's (Ork) came much later.

Ofc I'm perfectly willing to be corrected on these assumptions, just going by my own memory/experience here.

Warhammer Fantasy is not in the same universe as 40K.

Elfs =/= Eldar
Empire =/= Imperium of men
Orcs =/= Orkz

in other words, they are spelled differently because they are different things.

As Grulo outlined, in Fantasy they're Orcs and in 40k they're Orkz. The mentality differs slightly between universes.

I think Orcs were trademarked name of GamesWorkshop, so in order to prevent any lawsuits from GamesWorkshop, GamesWorkshop had to make a different name for Orcs in Space, so they called them Orkz.
