Essay time:
1. Focus on one character, leveling up to r40/rr40. Why? Because if you're ranking 5 classes at a time, your focus and gold earnings divide between them, and that's less gold income, and possibly more spending of what you can earn.
2. Be strict on currency spending, as you should buy what you need on the way to achieving max rank — I ranked my White Lion strictly through questing, and in specific, I would complete every living quest available in each map until I reached rank 40 (35 before Tier 4).

Through questing, you earn a decent amount of currency if not always spent in short time away. Upon ranking, you will receive a variety of loot, such as the popular Chaos Black, Skull White, and Ulgu Grey dye(s). It you find these dyes through kill and loot, just sell them to a vendor. Time is money indeed, and I rather not, learning from my mistakes, sit in /4 chat for time to time saying, "Selling this dye for the max reasonable price, pm me" — that goes a long way, and yes, that trade system is implemented in the game, but as the new player, I was always getting unhappy people saying that I was constantly spamming the /4 trade with things nobody cared about, but that's opinion. I didn't spam, and all items, including dyes, are wanted by specific persons.

Back to topic, just sell dyes to vendors, the 4-gold priced ones, the 2-gold priced ones, and everything below. Everybody thinks that because they see some guy list a Chaos Black dye for 25+ gold on the Auction House that it'll actually sell for that — wrong. Nobody messages me wanting a Chaos Black etc. dye that's priced anything over 10 gold. Time is money, so move on.

This works with a varying other items in the game. In the /4 chat, my consistency of offerings were at first the dyes, but seeing as they're better vendor loot than trade, we see where that was invested. If you receive an item of rare (blue) or very rare (purple) quality, then chances are that somebody may actually need that item, and /4 usually welcomes armor sales > dyes. Where people go wrong, including me, is overpricing those items. I know a good person who taught me well known as Shamira, since I was new to the game. You yourself want to make gold as much as the opposing trader wants the item you have. To walk away happy, greed of maxing out the most of the item is not the way to go. You need to find a reasonable structure between you and the trader where they can appreciate your mind of needing gold but not being so heavy on their coin. Find a mid or moderate price to sell your items (rank based... I don't like seeing r9 armor priced 3 gold or more just as green rarity. And why do people attempt pricing r9 very rare armor to 50+ gold? That upsets new players.) where you can earn that gold from the trade and move on to selling it acquiring others. Time is money.

If you want an example, some may know that I, Neptune, attempted to sell a Boundless Warrior Priest hammer for a high of 80 gold. My priced offering fluctuated over time, hoping to find the right buyer, and eventually I had sold it to a happy customer for 35 gold. You see the price difference there. It's because I looked on the Auction House and was mind-influenced that, "Hey, this guy has the same item listed for 120 gold, let me just go a bit lower." That's not how it works and so many others also believe that's a working method but it's not.

The only mistake I ever really made was buying a whole Eternal armor set, r35, for my White Lion — armor, weapons, and accessories. Honestly, that was me wanting to use my gold to not farm for the Duelist armor. I spent roughly 75 gold on it, and then resold the whole set got 25. Not bad, a 50 gold loss, but that's still a sum to me as far as being strict on my coin, only to then farm Scenarios for Duelist armor anyway. My other small one was spending nearly 30 gold on dyes for my armor, about a week before Tier 4 launched, though I still know a spot to farm roughly 25 gold per 15 minutes... It's not recommend though if you can't respect the players who need the spot to complete questing though, as you'd be mass farming them to accomplish this earning.

In all, without my spending mistakes, I've reached about 11 gold away from 1,000 gold. So 989. I would have had 1,067 without my mistakes. It's not bad though. In time, I've ranked from 35 to 40, spending no gold until I got r40/rr40 until I received all my Mercenary armors. Then I spent:

200 gold on 10 Talisman(s) of the Gladiator — r20, +20 Strength. This was worth the buy, considering that a single usually costs 40-ish. More or less. So I'm at 789 now.

It sucks to spend, but everyone else had the fashionable 100 gold r38 mount and I decided that I needed one too. Subtracting another 100 gold. We're at 689 now. From this time, I've done nothing then scavenging the maps for tome unlocks and helping players in Tier 1-3 zones complete PQs just for the fun of it. I'm sitting at roughly 725 at the moment.

In current time, I've leveled my Zealot to r38, doing no quests, no scenarios. At r33, I was able to participate in a Tier 4 PQ in Dragonswake, and went from r33 to r38, mass farming this PQ like everybody else for Ruin armor. The PQ rewards nicely if you run with a warband and slaughter everything with them, and at least get a Green bag or higher for a free few gold. I got to r38 in less then a week and received 3/5 Ruin armor pieces, following roughly 150 gold in farming.

The last note is simple. If you're needing armor to climb with your ranks, you only need armor every 10 levels. I recommend getting armor at ranks 9, 19, 29, and 39. That's how I've done it and I'm sitting with great armor and great gold.

What I personally have done in the past is just mail the guy Xg and then in the mail left the character to send on the other faction. I like to think the majority of people are trustworthy and not looking to scam... At some level it requires trust anyways so its the most convenient to just mail it with the guys name in the text on who you want gold on and its done relatively quick.
