To put rough numbers on it:

Vanq gear requires something like 660 medallions. You get somewhere between 1 and 20 per zone depending on a lot of things but lets say 10 per flip (optimistically) and a zone flip that gives you that much takes an hour (also optimistically). You also get it from Gold bags so with some luck will gather at least half that amount from bags themselves plus some bonus vanq from other bags. So lets says 20-30 hours of play time to gather the set and now you are competitive-ish.

Invader gear requires 220 for full set (and requires Vanq unlock). You get some from bag flips, four from fort win and lets say 10 per city. If you are fort logging and city logging (and win) these activities take about 1.5 hours for fort (need to get your spot from participating in prior zone) and city (which take an hour including wait times). So optimistically around 15-22 hours of play time to get your Invader. Now you are mostly competitive in a second tier sort of way.

Sov gear (which requires Invader unlock) requires 440 for full set. Only available from cities and some bags (e.g. fort and higher zone). Assuming the same 10 per flip (optimistically) you can expect to have the full set after 35-44 hours of play time.

There are also shards for Invader and Sov which exchange on a 5-1 basis. Some people say they drop like candy when in groups. I solo a lot and they do not for me. YMMV but I'm discounting them as a steady source.

So, you can expect (outside of some super carry by a guild) to spend upwards of 70 -100 hours play time getting your full Sov assuming things break your way.

That said, if you like the game, time flies. If you don't, it will be a slog.

Anyone telling you it's fast is talking about playing for 8+ hours a day, every day.

If you only play for one or two hours a day, you're looking at months to hit 40, then the real grind starts, and if you're in a North American time zone, forget it, because there is no organization at that time of night and no ORvR gets done except for random warbands roaming around without a purpose other than complaining about the other side being overpowered.
