Still works. Allot of Engies lost their lifes this way. Many Archmages died in the Zerg by kiting the wrong way. Allot of healers stand alone their self suddenly an ran for their life. Many Tanks stoped guarding noone down the cliffs. And lava got full of corpses.

the good thing here is you can just stack up ini to get detected more difiicultly even though this stats brings you no other benefit at all!
the most stupid thing is that pets can just shoot through vanish and i really think that this is some kind of bug.
regarding the "stay at range" advices. try to stay at range when a random choppa comes along with his come to the choppa skill.... and then just sticks you till you are dead, really annoying

Don't let the random choppa come within 40 ft, if being rdps. In a group situation, you would have a tank nearby to guard you as well anyway.
The value on init depends on your base init and init on gear. It is very valuable for low init classes.
Dying is no option.

What, you are bothered by pulls as a guarded melee dd? Imagine you are being pulled right where you want to be. In case you are in enemy backline with a ST party, you shouldn't be in pull range at all.

A full group is smashing on him and can't get him out of stealth. Yeah, in this case he died but there are tons of other situations where he got away and they also have vanish and other tools to escape.
as long as many classes has some kind of aoe dmg which does not need any target, stealth would just pointless since you could insta pop somebody out.
