Tbh there is nothing wrong with the base game. We are in fact in the same situation as in late T3; the only difference is the playerbase is more bipolar;

Back in T3 we had multiple organized warbands Kings Own/Inquisitors/Fureur fighting multiple organized warbands Porn Factory/Chlopi Chaosu/Tempest Wolves/Nazgul where skill and numbers were pretty even overall.

What do we have now? Destro has Phalanx and TUP(12 man?), order sometimes has CNTK(18 man?) and the russian blob that either dodges Phalanx or blobzergs them 4-to-1 (in which case skill is completely nonrelevant anymore; morale hitcap or not).

I guess it depends on what the objectives are of the Devs.
  • If you look at RoR as a personal development journey where you want a Live server to tinker with, then you do.
If you want a viable and healthy population, then it's already "tick tock" it seems to me.
If you want a competitive PvP environment, then the battle has already been lost. For now at least.
I've been reading the forum long enough to know that the Devs see this as an Alpha server and that user experience is not high on their agenda, but at some point reality has to set in. A nice and shiny server with all things functioning is all good, but it seems to me it would have been an awful waste of time if it's not well enough populated with skilled guilds to do RvR justice.

I'm a firm believer that RoR can be a resounding success, but not if one sticks his head in the sand and goes "la la la". People will only play a more than a decade old game if it's fun and its development is heading into a positive direction at an acceptable pace.

If that's absent, then people will only stick it out for so long. Even if it's a free game.

P.S. I'm not wishing to have a go at Devs, I appreciate that these are volunteers and - to be honest - they have woven miracles to bring this game back to life. Furthermore, obviously I'm not privvy to behind the scenes development of the game, so I'm hoping to be proven wrong! I'm just praying the patcher is imminent and that core issues will be addressed. ;-)

It is rather expected than whenever something is nerfed, people will come out to complain about how we've destroyed the class and they're functionally useless. This generally comes with no other actionable content. There is so much exaggeration going on it's really quite difficult to sift through for anything of use. Not that we don't try.

We're not looking to kill the server to spite players through our nefarious development changes. We're also not looking to make the server into a cotton candy themepark solo experience, so there's some balance to be met in the middle.

Fun is subjective. Some people come for the challenge, some come for the nostalgia, but I don't think anyone really comes here to experience an alpha state server, and it bites them hard on the ass when they do. There's a lot more work to do, it can't all be done at the same time, and we work on it every single week as the entire changelog subforum is evidenced by.

If that means we turn people off and they leave because the things we're working on doesn't match up with their optimal fantasies of what we SHOULD be doing, then so be it. We can't be everything to everyone. We do read everything, and try to communicate with people despite being buried in salt on a regular basis.

I was able to get a full warband and some action going last night in TM/KV in the deadest time (12-4am NA) by shilling really hard for the pug warband in /t4 and trying my best to let people know what is going on and what to do /1.

People will come if they know there is something going on, but when there's no chatter in /t4 no open WB and scenarios take over 10 minutes to pop they just leave.

The other problem is there is this paranoia that there is always destro spies watching /t4 or region and feeding info. It's completely unfounded and even if it wasn't what are they going to do with that information anyways? Play isn't even that organized in EU time. This is really killing the sense of community in RvR and compounds the low population.

Attracting players is only one part, unless they come in like 20+ at a time you are just going to lose them to the tumbleweeds rolling around.

Part of the problem that is holding me back is the huge disparity between order and destruction populations. Every time I have logged in in the last week destro has zerged right over order...in every tier, in every area. I am talking 3 or 4 to 1. It is incredibly disheartening. I am not really into destro and want to stay order, but in this case, hope does not spring eternal.

But Destro is server underdog, with no organized guilds, useless tanks, nerfed healers, no moral gain and no dps...isnt it? Did some German dude on the internet LIE to me? Say it ain't so!

It also just depends on when you play. NA primetime for at least a few weeks has been all order -- destro is no where to be seen.
