Been playing a little over a month (played some on Live as well).
I am trying out a lot of different roles, but I have been focusing on Chosen as my main. I am only level 32. I wanted to run my general approach by the board to see if I am basically on the right path.
For PvE leveling, I go 2h. With that, the dreadful agony aura and the M2 Raze, I am chew through lesser mobs pretty easy.
For PvP (and I mean almost exclusively Scenarios, getting into a warband is tough) I go SnB and use this:
RoR.builders - Chosen
The general idea to just be a big old hassle. I use the AP drain, anti-healing and toughness aura. I also used the anti-direct heal tactic and the AP drain tactic with Withering blow. SInce I usually don't die quickly, I use that time to wear down the opponents.
I tend to open skirmishes with Challenge and follow up with Hold the Line. I liberally use Taunt. I always use Guard, but not the best at following them.
After that things get a little more chaotic. I either take on those trying to break into our backline (other tanks with some mdps) or sometimes get in the healers face. I rarely kill healers. Heck, I rarely make a dent. But I figure I am still wearing down their resources.
FWIW, I am often at the top of the protection scores. And I see that as my goal rather than killing. Protecting and harrassing.
So is this a decent strategy? At least at my level?
Lastly, (puts on Kevlar) what I am doing wrong/what can I do better?

Re: New Player Tank Sanity Check
As a new player who also started chosen and did (some) mistakes
Some advice you may already know :
---------
https://wiki.returnofreckoning.com/Addons
https://tools.idrinth.de/addons/wrath-o ... s-reticle/
-Enemy Addon
There are others with more features but this one is the most common as it helps for every role
As a tank, it shows the range of your guard and other tank's guard
You can also clic cast on your group to swap guard fast
-Swift Assist Addon
Or, like nooby me, skip this one and simply make a macro: "/assist"
-Buffhead Addon
Can't do without
-WoH reticle Addon
To see the genius hiding behind a wall
---------
-Guard the right target
The first dps to guard is choppa (best aoe and super squishy)
Most of the time you will go frontline with your guarded Mdps and Stun/Repel people
Always keep an eye on your healers as they will probably be ambushed by witch hunters
Knowing when to switch guard is the key to shine as a tank
Commonly the Meta is : 2dps 2heals 2tanks so change group when it's best to
-Gear
Check South IC for PvP gear (Green offset / Blue Weapons)
At level 24 (Mayhem) and level 36 (Ruin) you can join a "Public Quest" group to get a huge PvE set
You can check Auction House for cheap Potions/Talismans but don't waste gold there
Some Rvr / Influence rewards can also be great
-Pve
Leveling is generally not recommended
Once max lvl 40, you will get your Renown Rank to 80
If your renown is too low when you reach lvl 40, you will miss a lot of bonuses
Try to get both Level and Renown Rank to 40 (you can even reach 60+ Rr)
Always use that +25% Renown Potion
When you can, join a warband to discover RvR as it gives way more Rr
That said, it's not that bad as 5 dungeons and 1 raid will give great set
Some quest / war story are fun to read so feel free to PvE while waiting for SC
(Corrupting Retribution Aura good for solo)
-PvP
Both SnB and 2H are good, most important is you Always Guard Someone
You may try 2h once you reach level 36+, it's super fun
Ap Aura is also for you + teammates, especially if you have sham/zeal healers
Heal Debuff Aura is great for your team' dps if they AoE
Toughness Aura is top but I'm still unsure which is best between Resis Aura
If your team is safe, switching to Dreadful Agony Aura can make you first dps
Check other chosen on your group to combine auras
At open, use Suppression and keep that buff on
Hold the Line is always great when facing many Ranged dps
Aoe taunt can be useful but will instant fade on an AoE dps
Use SingleTarget Taunt as much as you can, to assist a kill or interrupt
Don't bother with other tanks, just Repel them away from their ally
Fight a healer if he is attacked by your teammates, only witch elf can 1v1 a good healer
You can also "Quake" healers when they all in the back
Tainted Wound Tactic : Not the best choice Imo
Ap Drain Tactic : Same, might disturb RP / AM but not that much
Lvl 35 try out Hastened Dismissal tactic
Lvl 37 use the "Power from the Gods" tactic for unlimited Ap
At level 32 you may try :
Renown SnB
Talent Tree :
Corruption
or
Discord
Then at level 36 try 2h, once 40 you will go back SnB
Renown 2H
Dread
Finally, always dye your gear to blind your enemies with your epicness
