Struggling to commit: WE vs. WH vs. Engi – Finding my "Main" in the current meta

Hi everyone,

I’m at a crossroads and really need some veteran insight. I’ve reached a point in RoR where I feel like I need to finally "stick" to one class to truly master the gear progression and the endgame. Right now, I’m bouncing between three characters and I’m struggling to decide which one fits my goals best.

My current roster:
  • Witch Elf (Nyss): Nearly RR 50. I’ve been grinding for my Sentinel Ring and Beastlord pieces, but I’ve hit that "RR 50 wall" where I feel like a victim in scenarios against RR 80+ players.
  • Engineer (Bitzi Big Bang): RR 48. She feels much more flexible and versatile. I enjoy the different specs (Sniper vs. Grenadier), but I’m not sure if she can give me that "assassin adrenaline" I’m looking for.
  • Witch Hunter: RR 16 (just started). I love the aesthetic, but since I already have the WE, I’m wondering if it’s worth the reroll to Order side.
What I’m looking for:
My main focus is 1v1 duels, small-scale roaming (2v2, 6v6), and unorganized "pug" warbands. I want a class that can absolutely hold its own in a 1v1 (no fear of solo encounters!), but is still "okay" in a warband. It doesn’t have to be the star of the WB, but it shouldn't be completely useless either.

My questions to the community:
  • 1. WE vs. WH – What are the actual differences today?
I know they are mirrors, but they never feel identical. Where does the WE shine compared to the WH, and vice-versa? I’ve heard rumors that WE is more about pure burst and positioning, while WH has slightly better utility or CC. In the current state of the game, which one feels more rewarding for a solo/small-scale player?
  • 2. Is the Engineer viable for my goals?
I love the flexibility of the Engi. Between the turret, the keg, the magnet, and the shield, it feels like I have a tool for every situation. But can an Engi actually win 1v1s against skilled opponents, or am I just a "support DPS" in the end? How does she feel in the current meta where "the cards are being reshuffled" with recent balance tweaks?
  • 3. The "Fun" Factor & The Meta:
Which of these three would you pick if you wanted a "main" to stick with for the next 30 Renown Ranks? I’ve heard that the Engi really "starts" at RR 70+, but the journey there is painful. Is the payoff worth it, or is the Engineer/Witch Hunter a more consistent experience?
I feel like the game has changed a lot recently and I want to make sure I’m investing my time (and my gold/talismans!) into the right career. I’m tired of being the "victim" at RR 50 and want to push through to become the hunter.

What are your thoughts on the strengths/weaknesses of these classes in the current meta? Which one is your personal favorite and why?

Thanks in advance for the long read and the help!

If your main focus is really solo/small-scale and that “I am the danger” assassin feeling, I think the answer is honestly leaning heavily toward WE over the others.

WE and WH are mirrors on paper, but they are not the same once you actually play as or against them for a while.

DPS WE feels way more savage and momentum-based. When things click, you feel absolutely terrifying. You pick the fight, explode someone, and disappear. The class rewards confidence, positioning, patience, and knowing exactly when to commit.

DPS WH feels a bit more controlled and “cleaner.” Far safer, more utility-focused, more forgiving. WH is allowed to have the burst that WE has, but with some very strong defensive abilities. WH feels more consistent, while WE feels higher-risk/higher-reward.

But honestly?
You already HAVE the WE.
And you’re already almost RR50.

A lot of people reroll right at the point where stealth classes feel the absolute worst to play. That RR40-60 range is brutal because you’re constantly running into RR80+s with full gear, maxed renown, years of experience, and every stat breakpoint optimized. Every fight feels unfair. Every scenario feels like you got hit by a truck.

But that wall eventually breaks, a geared WE stops feeling like prey and starts feeling like a horror movie character.

Also, I think a lot of newer WE players underestimate how strong a more defensive/survivability-focused WE can actually be. Everyone imagines the class as pure glass-cannon burst, but some of the nastiest WEs I’ve seen were the ones built to survive, disengage, reset fights, and slowly bleed you out instead of just coin-flipping all-ins.

I prefer a brawler style setup for my WE - so its tactics, rr, and abilities are focused more on that path. Prioritizing more strength vs armor/toughness/regen.

Also, for the kind of gameplay you described:
1v1s
2v2 / 6v6
random pug chaos
roaming
hunting isolated players
…WE is honestly perfect for that.

If I were in your shoes, I’d probably stick with the WE and push through the ugly middle phase instead of rerolling WH. You’re closer than it feels right now.

The scary WEs you run into are usually the ones who didn’t quit at RR50.

You are going in circles, no offense but its pretty dumb already, you have got all your answers in previous threads. Its like what your 5th thread of same thing?

Also its impossible to do 6v6 taking into consideration voice is not an option for you.

Thank you so much for this amazing and detailed breakdown. You hit the nail on the head, and it honestly motivates me to keep pushing through.

You are completely right about that RR45+ wall. Right now, I definitely feel more like prey than a horror movie character, and every fight against players feels brutal. But your text reminded me that I just need to bite the teeth together and push through this phase! ;)

To give you an update on where I’m at:
Right now, I am wearing a mix of Bloodlord and Conqueror gear. I am currently running Bilerot Burrows to get the ring, and then I’ll see where to go next.

As for my spec, this is what I am currently running: https://builder.returnofreckoning.com/c ... 4,523,9450

I actually decided against the health regen build for now, even though everyone says it’s super strong. I want to focus more on the active assassin/brawler playstyle.

Since you mentioned preferring a brawler-style setup with a focus on Strength vs. Armor/Toughness: Do you have any specific recommendations for a spec, masteries, or gear progression once I hit RR50+? I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to balance that out without dropping all my damage.

Thanks again for the encouragement, it really helped!

@nocturnalguest:
Fair enough, you're not wrong. I know I’ve asked about classes a few times now. But honestly, what’s wrong with that? As long as people are willing to reply and share their experience, I don't see the harm. If you don't ask, you don't learn, and the choice paralysis in RoR is real before committing to a massive endgame grind.

Engi since you lack experience. Once that is done WH to be able to get both potions and tallies

Order bc aao is favourable atm for order
A reasonable RvR system that could make the majority happy http://imgur.com/HL6cgl7

Off... This one is really a no contest, engi got biggest guns and is not a elf. Also its very fun to play and bnext one likely to get any changes. If we look at previous patches there will not be major nerfs inc.
