"Since the foundation of Naggaroth, it has been decreed by Malekith that only female Dark Elves are permitted to learn the Dark Arts of Sorcery. Even then, the Sorceress' allegiance is to the Witch King, first and foremost, and thereafter to one of the six great Convents. Aside from their skill at focusing the energy of the Aethyr, the women selected to be Sorceresses are expert stateswomen, possessing cunning minds and incredible intelligence. As they are beholden to the Witch King alone, the Noble Houses that seek their talents must negotiate terms for which the Sorceresses will lend their aid. There is ever a cost to be paid, and it is always a high one. While male Sorcerers do exist amongst the Dark Elves, they are viewed with disdain and unable to join the Convents. Instead these outcasts practice their dark arts in service to ambitious noble houses that prefer to remain free of debts to the Convents."
