[SW] What's the deal with assault?

I'm doing some theorycrafting and spending way too much time going between the royal vendors trying to figure out where to spend my hard-earned medallions. I keep hearing that aSW is the only SW but I'm just not seeing it. Maybe the damage is a little better but shooting people at range and being able to kite seems way more effective and useful to my team.

I can see how mixing sets (losing that sweet sweet full Invader bonus) can get you a lot of wounds. I guess some str tali's and a pot could get you to the soft cap for strength? 3500-4k armor and poor toughness (if you take the -120 tactic). None of the attack rotations seem as good either, at least on paper.

(1) I'm missing a key piece of this that makes it all work. Honest and sincere question here, please forgive my ignorance, but what's the draw of an aSW?

(2) Is there a vid of one in action doing very well?

Assault spec is capable of serious burst with the right gear. You don't want to slot str talis as ballistic skill from items carry over to strength (while in assault stance). Pots and renown do not, however.

As for videos (recent), I'm not sure, but you can find some older ones from last year though.

Oh I didn't realize the Talisman buffs converted, I thought it was just the intrinsic stats on the gear.

I guess I'm worried about squishiness. Losing 120 toughness to the tactic is begging for trouble, so I'm hesitant to use it. Can any aSW's share their experiences, particularly since the updates last month?

Uhhh. double armor >>> toughness... You're gonna need guard most of the time and learn how to move in and out of a fight if you don't have dedicated healers (just like any MDPS). ASW damage is far more effective than ranged for burst in 90% of situations. I haven't recorded any 6v6's since Sov has come out but its very good; even if its been nerfed recently.

It plays very different than RSW, obviously, but if you don't do pve and don't run in a decent group I'd suggest 5 Warlord / 3 Def sov (Shoulders/Gloves/Boots). If you do pve and have a decent group then 6 War/3 Sent (Gloves/Belt/Jewel) is BiS.

also note that RSW and ASW have different Sov sets you need (7 Offensive Sov for RSW).

As assault spec, you're very tanky since you'll likely have 3-4k armor (depending on gear and if using armor talis). Toughness will drop quite a bit with the tactic, but it's core for the spec and you won't feel as squishy as you may think. Usually when i'm roaming, I try and take care of any casters if able since, in my opinion, they usually bring the higher threat to me if left alone compared to most physical dps.

If by "updates last month" you mean the scout/skirmish remakes, I feel that those do have a place, but I don't feel as though they were implemented as well as they could have been. Assault (my current spec), just feels better to me for what I use the class for (primarily solo roam). Old skirmish used to be very strong as a solo roamer in its pre-rework implementation. Now? Not so much.

So many questions.

I guess the big lingering question I have is: just how defense do you need to build in order to survive, vs how much are you juggling stances to escape combat altogether?

Do you end up fighting at the edges still, or can you run with the main assist?

What's your bread and butter attack rotation?

All of this depends on the situation and what you're fighting in.

Well, do you run in a premade? SC's? City? Roaming? WB? All of this changes everything; people come and look for advice without giving a general direction at all and then get all upset when they don't get tailor-made advice.

Anyone have a link for aSW build/tactics/renown points. Say 40/50 or 40/60

Mostly solo roam
