you can invest stats into elsewhere other than weapon skill.

I do think that also. Strength will increase your chances to hit versus the parry of the target, which is very important for the progressive crippling rotations of DoKs and WPs. If you miss some hits, you may not be able to apply the next effect in the rotation, sometimes leaving you vulnerable to a comeback from your target.
