They were overperforming for a while, got nerfed hard when devs got rid of .exmode or whatever it was called. Their mechanic is also broken and underperforming. Healer spec has AP issues I believe and landing the AP drain is a lot harder with disrupt rates being higher after their changes, and DPS spec is the only caster class in the game with the combination of no disrupt strikethrough tactic, no 160 int tactic, and no undefendable attacks ontop of being very DoT heavy (meaning they got hurt hardest with disrupt changes IMO). DPS spec also didn't have to deal with guardian WLs a year ago.

You can still make em work but other classes have it easier.

Well that makes sense, it seemed like a pretty easymode class before

barely functions as a healer due to AP issues and dot spec killed by disrupt changes

i'm hoping they just change the entire mechanic with client control and make them viable healers

Shaman was always "weakest" Destro healer in terms of healing output, until the .ab ex mode which allowed them to use their mechanic to do dmg-healing. That spec was somewhat overperforming, and led to some increase in shaman pop, but now after buffs to disrupt and removal of ab ex, shaman is back to its old status as "meh" healer (compared to all around amazing zealot and "backbone of warbands"-DoK).
They have their advantages too, which is their speed and stacking detaunts. So basically unless enemy does heavy CC focus on shaman (M1 root, M1 CC), the little devil can kite indefinitely while pumping out decent heals.
Shaman/AM snare puddle is still quite strong as it AFAIK has no upper cap how many people it can snare (normal AoE snare abilities usually have 9 target upper limit if not less). The AP drain was godmode when focusing on enemy dps and starving them to such extent that they lose their potency and ability to burst, but with healer shaman having low Intelligence, landing the debuff has become problematic.

You can still shine on shaman, and there may be possible future reworks to help the class, but for now the class remains certainly challenging. Hybrids that try balancing between healing and damaging have always been in the shadow of pure healers and pure damage dealers, maybe now more than ever. And while the mechanic may be underwhelming, the good thing is that at least it has no negative downside unlike some other classes (like Sorc/BW self explosion or SH/WL/engi/magus dmg loss from dead pet).

And things here in RoR are still better for shaman compared to live, where knights had broken 95feet triple shatter to negate all your HoTs. :)

Its a shame that devs thought it easier to outright remove the changes rather than reduce the numbers. The class was good fun with the changes, and was Overpowered, but just needed some tweaks to tone it down.

Shaman current state has AP issues because of the cost of using both the regular + toughness HoT is costly, and the difficulty in landing the AP drain now. With resto-burst only working on direct heals, you need that AP Drain to land or you just run around like a headless chicken.

Shaman only really provides great kiting potential now. It comes down to does your group want better kiting vs Healbless Zealots or Tanky DoKs.

The changes were removed because the guy who wrote the code for the ab.ex mode had left the team and no one knew how exactly it worked and because of our limited resources no one wanted to put time and effort into figuring it out.
This doesnt mean that the changes are gone forever, now with client control Im sure you will see shammy changes at some point in the future.

seems like a real douche move to leave and not to explain the team how the stuff you coded works

Less or more of a douche move than criticizing people that give up their time for free?
