Game launches but can't connect

So basically my issue is: The game will launch, but the normal "connecting, handshaking" etc. messages in the box on the right don't show up and about a minute later I get a popup saying "Authentication failed -- Application will now terminate."

I haven't been able to play since the patch a week or two ago :(

I looked through the FAQ and tried this fix

I've been trying on different days and the server has shown as online, and I've reinstalled the game with no luck. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Check anti virus has not false identified the game as harmful. If so add game directory to excludion from virus protector

Hmm ok, the only other thing coming to mind is:

Check torrent is not running locking the game
Check write protect is removed

I don't run any torrent software.

I'm assuming write protect = read only setting. The folder is marked read-only and seems to stay that way no matter what I do to change it, but all of the files are have read-only toggled off.

Sounds like you place the game directory under something like “program files”
Move the directory to something less windows controlled such as c\ror\ then remover write protect
Windows has some special treatment of some directories

Please close RoRLauncher.exe

Had trouble fixing the read-only issue. However I did manage to solve my problem by using a VPN and just connecting to the nearest server, not entirely sure why that works but I can get in the game now. Thanks for your help Acidic!

I am having the same issue. I get to the main screen and the music starts playing but the black box has nothing written in it and then a couple seconds later I get a pop up that says Authentication error.

I have tried everything. Redownloaded the game twice, keep clicking off read only. I tried downloading hotspot shield for a VPN. Nothing seems to work. Everything was fine 2 days ago. Now I cant play =[

I tried to use the fixes here: https://appuals.com/how-to-fix-folder-k ... indows-10/ to remove the read only, but I still couldn't get it to work. The VPN I downloaded is called ProtonVPN, not sure if it'll help but that one solved it for me.
