Well, i like deft cause it protects you from engi/BW AoE, and that's something you can't mitigate with armour. Wouldn't say BW is not popular, too. It doesn't pop a lot, but tends to pop when you need it, a.k.a when disengaging/repositioning, and then lasts a while. After FS and parry deft defender is imo third good renown points sink, assuming you're not running quick escape. Let's you defend against BWs, engis and sws, and when going 2H as blackguard, which happens reasonably often, you have very little counterplay aside from taking it. And then, as snb, you still don't have many other renown skills to invest into.
