I was wondering if there's a way I can create my own server.

If you know how to, sure you can. Don't know how else to answer such a question.

My understanding is that you can, but it won't look like what ror is. RoR is the culmination of something like 4+ years of work

You need packets and such stuff afaik, and ofc know how to work with them etc. It's not like you can just pop another server into existence. As dansari said, you would have to start over from scratch, implementing everything back into the game.

Aye. When RoR started it was an empty world. No items in the database, no quests, no texts.
So yes, RoR as seen today is the work of a team over the course of 4 years.
And there is not the slightest chance you will get a copy of the complete code.

Is there a way someone could help me? I just want to start one up and mess a around with a couple of things it would be a great experience for me to learn

Feel free to go through whatever is posted on the forums, but our staff members have our own server they should be worrying about at a much higher priority than helping someone work on their own little sandbox. The resources to get started should still be out there, and there are several people that have attempted to do the same thing on these forums. Use the search function.
