You don't need vanquisher to get and wear invader.

I only tried TB for about 3 SCs, and the crits just come too much and too fast for my liking. Don't recall if I had guard or not, but usually not I'd wager. Went back FS.

From rr40 to early 60s is pretty quick. Participate in the lakes, keeps and forts and you'll be fine, gettin' back in the swing of things.

I'll work backwards with your second part first. Bolster is something you get in the rvr lakes (areas) that scales directly with your gear.
