You can play deftard Magus, if you like that kind of thing, but for normal damage spec you would never spec parry or toughness. First its highly questionable choice, second you need to spec magic crit and you wont have much spare points until rr 70 +-.

Personally I do not think the damage is too much, but the combination of mobility, hard CC and CC immunity on Pet makes it more potent than it should be.
