It seems that Lairs are impossible to solo if around the correct level. Is there an amount of players that is always required? Like, at least 2 or 3 or however many?

For Dungeons - what is the best way to get a group together? Is there a que? Or is it ...

I try to make it so I don't have any players from my guild on my friends list.
And if I have a friend that is always with 1-2 others, I just make sure the one who is on the most is on my friends list, as they can have the others on their friends list.

You should try to collect two sets of gear and weapons. One with strength and one with willpower. Get both on same item when you can, but having wounds and other stats help to give you longer survivability.
